Drainage · Chelmsford & Essex

Drainage in Chelmsford and land drainage across Essex

Standing water, soggy ground and overflowing downpipes are usually a drainage problem. We plan and dig practical drainage with our own mini digger: surface water drainage for yards, driveways and buildings, land drainage for wet fields, paddocks and gardens, soakaways and outfalls to get water away, and downpipe connections into new or existing drains.

Trenches are dug to the right line and fall, pipe is laid — typically twin-wall or perforated land drain — then backfilled with stone or gravel and the ground reinstated. We work for homeowners, farms and landowners, and commercial sites across Chelmsford and Essex.

  • Surface water drainage — yards, hard standing, driveways and around buildings
  • Land drainage — fields, paddocks, gardens and wet areas
  • Soakaways and outfalls — discharging water to a soakaway, ditch or pond where suitable
  • Downpipe connections — connecting gutters and downpipes into the drainage system
  • Drainage and service trenches — membrane-lined trenches, pipe and duct laying, gravel backfill

Where drainage connects to a public sewer, discharges to a watercourse, or forms part of building work, approvals may be needed from the sewerage company, the Environment Agency or Building Control. We will talk you through what your project involves.

Sewage treatment plant installation in Chelmsford and Essex

For properties that are not connected to the mains sewer, a sewage treatment plant treats waste water on site. Our groundwork for sewage treatment plant installation covers the full dig: excavating the pit, preparing the base, setting the plant in place, installing inspection chambers and laying the drainage pipework, then backfilling around the installation.

Off-mains drainage is regulated. In England, discharges from a small sewage treatment plant must meet the Environment Agency’s general binding rules (or be covered by a permit), and a new or replacement installation normally needs Building Regulations approval. This is general guidance only — check the requirements for your property before work starts.

What a typical installation involves

  • Excavating the pit to the depth the plant needs
  • Preparing the base, such as a concrete base where required
  • Setting the plant level and connecting the pipework
  • Installing inspection chambers
  • Backfilling, typically with gravel or another suitable material
  • Leaving the area safe and tidy

Water leak repair and supply pipe excavation

When a buried water supply pipe leaks, the first job is finding and exposing it. We carry out water pipe excavation in Chelmsford and across Essex — digging carefully down to the supply pipe so the leak can be located and repaired, then backfilling and reinstating the ground.

We also dig trenches for new or replacement supply pipes, including long runs across gardens, field edges and farmland, with sand bedding laid ready for the pipe. This helps homeowners, farms and businesses with water leak repair in Essex where the problem is underground.

Typical leak and supply pipe work

  • Excavating to expose a leaking supply pipe
  • Working carefully around live services
  • Trenching for new or replacement supply pipes
  • Sand bedding and backfill
  • Reinstating gardens, fields and verges

Your water company is usually responsible for the pipe up to the property boundary or meter, and the property owner for the supply pipe beyond it — check with your water company if you are unsure who is responsible for a leak.

Farm tracks & hardstanding · Essex

Access tracks and hardstanding

We build farm tracks, access roads and hardstanding for farms, yards, equestrian sites and commercial premises in Chelmsford and across Essex. A well-built track starts below the surface: the soft topsoil is stripped back to a firm formation, a geotextile membrane is laid to separate the ground from the stone, and crushed hardcore is spread and compacted in layers to give a firm, free-draining surface.

  1. Strip topsoil and soft ground back to a firm formation
  2. Membrane — lay geotextile to stop the stone sinking into the subsoil
  3. Hardcore — spread crushed hardcore or stone over the membrane
  4. Finish — level and compact for a firm, usable track or base

Ideal for farm track construction, field and barn access, parking and turning areas, machinery and storage yards, and bases for buildings. Track width, depth and stone type are agreed with you for each job.

Groundwork FAQs

What groundwork do you carry out?

Typical groundwork includes excavating footings and foundations, digging drainage and service trenches, preparing bases for driveways, patios, sheds and garden rooms, levelling and grading gardens, and digging out for features such as in-ground trampolines. Tell us about your project and we will confirm what we can do.

Do I need planning permission or Building Regulations approval?

It depends on the project. Foundations for extensions and many structural works need Building Regulations approval, and in England a new or replacement driveway in a front garden over 5 square metres usually needs planning permission unless it uses permeable surfacing or drains to a permeable area. Check with your local council or designer before work starts.

Do you check for underground services before digging?

The location of underground services such as gas, water, electricity and telecoms should be identified before any excavation. Please share any plans or information you have, and we will agree a safe method of work with you before we start.

Can you fix a waterlogged garden, yard or field?

Often, yes. Waterlogging is usually solved with land drainage or surface water drainage — perforated land drain or twin-wall pipe laid to a fall in a stone-backfilled trench, taking water to a soakaway, ditch or other suitable outfall. Send us photos and tell us where the water sits and we will suggest an approach.

Where can drainage water go?

Surface and land drainage water is usually taken to a soakaway, a ditch or watercourse, or an existing surface water drain, depending on the site and the ground. Discharges to a watercourse or connections to a public sewer may need permission, so we will discuss the options for your site.

Do you build farm tracks and hardstanding?

Yes. We build farm and field access tracks, yards and hardstanding areas by stripping the soft ground, laying a geotextile membrane and spreading and compacting crushed hardcore. Tell us the length, width and what will use the track and we will quote accordingly.

Can you install drainage and underground pipework?

Yes. We dig drainage and service trenches, lay pipework and ducting, backfill with gravel or shingle, and excavate for underground tanks and inspection chambers. Work that connects to a public sewer, or involves a treatment system or discharge, may need approval from the sewerage company, the council (Building Regulations) or the Environment Agency — check what applies to your project before work starts.

What rules apply to a sewage treatment plant?

In England, discharges from a small sewage treatment plant must meet the Environment Agency’s general binding rules, or the owner needs an environmental permit. New or replacement installations normally need Building Regulations approval, and the plant should be maintained and emptied in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. This is general guidance only — check the latest requirements on GOV.UK for your property.

Can you install a sewage treatment plant?

Yes. We carry out the groundwork for sewage treatment plant installation in Chelmsford and Essex, including excavation, base preparation, setting the plant, inspection chambers and drainage pipework. Send us details of the property and the plant you are considering for a quote.

Can you dig out a leaking water pipe?

Yes. We excavate to expose leaking underground water supply pipes so the leak can be found and repaired, and reinstate the ground afterwards. If you are not sure whether the leak is on your side of the boundary, check with your water company first — they are usually responsible for the pipe up to the boundary or meter.

What happens to the soil we dig out?

Let us know when you ask for a quote whether you want spoil kept on site (for example to re-level another area) or taken away, and we will explain the options for your job.

Can you work in gardens with limited access?

Often, yes. Mini diggers can work in many residential gardens. Tell us the narrowest point of the access route and send photos so we can confirm what will fit.

Can you dig out for an in-ground trampoline?

Yes. We recently dug out for a sunken trampoline in an Essex garden — see the photos on this page. Send us the trampoline size and photos of the area for a quote.
